Most disorders that cause limb pain most commonly affect your legs. is discussed elsewhere. The pain of the tomb can be constant or occur irregularly. Pain can be precipitated by movement or has no relation to movement. Other symptoms, such as heat, redness, numbness, or tingling, may also be present, depending on the cause of limb pain. Causes Injuries and excessive use are the most common causes of pain in a limb, but people generally know when these events are the cause of their pain. This discussion covers pain of the limbs not related to injury or strain. There are many causes. The most common causes are the following: the common majoritySlurry cage in a deep vein ()Bacterial skin infection ()Uncommon but severe causes requiring immediate evaluation and treatment include Accidental but severe block of an artery in the member (above)Infection of soft tissue (only arm pain) Other less common causes include bone tumors, bone infections () and nervous problems such as nerve pressure or nerve degeneration (such as caused by or abuse of long-term alcohol). Less common Evaluation It is particularly important to ensure that the person does not have a sudden obstruction of an artery because the limb can develop gangrene if there is no blood flow for more than a few hours. The following information can help people decide when the doctor's evaluation is needed and help them know what to expect during the evaluation. Warning Signs In people with member pain, certain symptoms and features are a cause of concern. IncludeSudden, intense painLimb that is cold to the touch or pale chest pain, sweating, shortness of breath or palpitations Signs of severe disease (e.g. confusion, fever or collapse) Tomb that is suddenly swollen, blistened, or has black spots Risk factors for deep vein thrombosis, such as recent surgery, bed rest or a plaster in a legNew nervous deficits, such as weakness or numbness of the affected limb When to see a doctorPeople who have warning signs should see a doctor immediately. People without warning signs should call a doctor. The doctor will decide how fast the person needs to be seen based on symptoms, age and presence of other medical disorders. Typically, a delay of several days is not harmful. What the doctor doesDoctors first ask questions about the symptoms of the person and medical history. Doctors do a physical exam. What you find during history and physical examination often suggests a cause of the pain of the limb and the tests that may need to be done. Doctors ask how long has the pain of the limb been present? If pain occurs at certain times or during specific activities How intense is pain, whether it is acute or agitated pain Where pain is found What activities trigger or worsen pain What the person does to relieve pain What other symptoms (such as numbness or tingling) occur along with painDoctors look for symptoms that may indicate a cause of pain. Some obvious findings can be very useful in diagnosing the cause of limb pain. For example, back or neck pain suggests that a nerve root can be affected and the fever suggests that the person has an infection. Breathlessness and rapid heart rate suggest blocking an artery by a blood clot that has traveled from one leg to the lungs (). An irregular pulse suggests that the person may have a certain abnormal heart rate () that has caused a blood clot to travel from the heart to block an artery in the leg. The painful extremity is inspected for color, swelling, and any changes in skin or hair. The doctor also checks pulses, temperature, tenderness and crepitation (a subtle crack sensation that indicates the gas in the soft tissue caused by a severe infection). The strength, sensation and reflexes are compared between the affected and unaffected sides. Blood pressure is sometimes measured on the ankle or wrist of the affected limb and compared to blood pressure on an unaffected arm or leg. If the blood pressure is much lower in the painful limb, the arteries of the limb are likely to be blocked. Some causes and characteristics of lamb pain Case* Common Features† Tests Sudden and severe pain that develops in a few minutes Blocking an artery in a member, usually a leg, for a blood clot Sudden, intense pain Cooling and palidez of the extremity After several hours, signs of nervous malfunction, such as weakness, numbness, tingling or cramping Weakness or no pulse in the limb Arteriography performed immediately Sudden herniation of a disk in the column Pain and sometimes numbness that occurs in a line down the limb Pain that often gets worse by the movement Neck or back pain often Sometimes weakness in part of the affected limb Generally, the MRI (myocardial infarction) Pain in an arm, not in a leg Sometimes pain or pressure on the chest or jaw Sometimes nausea, sweating and shortness of breath Sometimes in people known to have heart disease ECG Blood tests for substances that indicate heart damage (cardiopathy markers) Sometimes angiography of the arteries of the heart Fatty deposits on the walls of the artery (), which reduce blood flow, almost always in the leg intermittent episodes of leg pain that occur only when walking and relieved for a few minutes of rest (intermittent surgery) Ultrasonography Sometimes arteryography Pain gradually developed (more hours to days) Bacterial skin infection () An irregular area of redness, warmth and tenderness Sometimes the fever A medical test Sometimes the blood cultures (a blood clot in a deep vein in a leg [normally] or an arm) Swelling of a whole part of a limb (e.g. whole or calf and upper leg) Generally pain, redness, heat and/or tenderness in the affected area Sometimes in people with risk factors for blood clots, such as recent surgery, injury, bed rest, a plaster in a leg, hormonal therapy or cancer Ultrasonography Sometimes a blood test to detect blood clots (D-dimer) Deep bacterial infection under the skin and/or muscle () Deep and constant pain Redness, warmth, tenderness and swelling that feels tension Signals of severe disease (such as fever, confusion and rapid heart rate) Sometimes a discharge of foul, blisters or areas of skin discovered and dead Blood and tissue crops X-ray Sometimes the MRI Bone infection () Deep and constant pain that often happens at night Bone disease and fever Often in people with risk factors (such as a weakened immune system, the use of injectable drugs or a known source for infection) X-rays and MRI and/or CT scan Sometimes bone culture Chronic pain (present for a week or more) Bone tumor (bone or spread to the cancer bone elsewhere in the body) Deep and constant pain that is often worse at night Bone tenderness Often in people known to have cancer X-rays and MRI and/or CT scan Pressure on certain nerves, as is the case in Generally weakness and sometimes numbness or tingling in part of the limb A medical test Sometimes studies of electromyography and nerve conduction Sometimes the MRI Pressure on a spinal nerve root (the part of a spinal nerve next to the spinal cord), which can be caused by a herniated disk or bone spades Pain and sometimes numbness that occurs in a line down the limb Pain that often gets worse by the movement Neck or back pain often Generally weakness in part of the affected limb Generally, the MRI Degeneration or swelling of many nerves throughout the body () Chronic numbness and burning pain, typically in both hands and/or both feet Often in people with a disorder that causes nerve damage, such as diabetes, alcohol abuse or vasculitis Normally a medical examination Sometimes blood tests or electromyography and nerve driving tests Acute pain or pain pain Sometimes the sensation and pain caused by a stimulus that would not normally be considered painful increased Often the skin that appears red, mottled or ashen and increases or decreases sweat in the affected limb Typically in people who have had an injury (sometimes many years before) Just a medical test. (cause of blood to the pool on the legs) Swelling of ankles or legs Chronic discomfort, pain or cramps on your legs but without pain Sometimes reddish brown, leather areas on the skin and shallow sores on the lower legs Often varicose veins Just a medical test. *The arm or leg pain caused by injury is not included. † Features include symptoms and results of your doctor's exam. The above features are typical but not always present. CT = CT scan; ECG = electrocardiography; MRI = MRI. Cause*Common characteristics Tests Sudden and severe pain that develops in a few minutes A block of an artery in an extremity, usually a leg, for a blood clotSudden, severe painCoolity and palideity of the extremity After several hours, signs of malfunction of the nerve, such as weakness, numbness, tingling or cramping Pain that develops gradually (more hours to days)Bacterial infection of the skin (sometimes an irregular area of redness, warmth, and tendernessSometimes a fever A doctor's analysisSometimes blood cultures (a blood clot in a deep vein in a leg [normally] or an arm)Inflammation of an entire part of a limb (e.g., whole calf or leg) Chronic pain (presents for a week or more)A bone tumor (bone or spread to the cancer bone elsewhere)Persistent pain, often worse at night Bone tenderness Often in people known for having cancerRerayos X and RM and/or TCPresura on certain nerves, as is the case in a brachial plexo disorder (a nerve network on the shoulder and back) (which involves compression of nerves or blood vessels that pass between the neck and chest) Generally weakness and sometimes numbness or tingling in part of the limb A medical examinationSometimes electromyography and nerve conduction studies Sometimes MRIPressure in a spinal nerve root (the part of a spinal nerve next to the spinal cord), which may be caused by a herniated disc or bone spades. Just a medical test* The arm or leg pain that is caused by injury is not included.† Features include symptoms and results of your doctor's exam. The above features are typical but not always present. CT = CT scan; ECG = electrocardiography; MRI = MRI. TestingTesting is not necessary for all people with member pain. Doctors can often diagnose some causes of limb pain based on people's symptoms and physical exam findings. In some cases, however, tests are required to confirm the diagnosis. For example, doctors can check the ankle-brachial index to diagnose. The blood pressure is measured in both arms and on both legs. If the blood pressure in the ankle is lower than the blood pressure in the arms for a certain amount (less than 90% of the arm pressure), the blood flow to the leg is insufficient. Treatment The best way to treat the pain of the limbs is to treat the underlying disorder. Analgesics such as acetaminophen and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs can help relieve pain. Opioids are sometimes needed. Key points In people with sudden and severe pain, blood flow to the extremity has often been stopped or reduced and tests must be done quickly. Symptoms and features found during the doctor's exam often provide clues about the cause of the limb pain. Was this page helpful?
