During this procedure, a surgeon makes an incision on the chest wall between the ribs, usually to operate in the lungs. Through this incision, the surgeon may remove part or a whole lung. Toracotomy is often done to treat lung cancer. Sometimes it is used to treat problems with your heart or other structures in your chest, such as your diaphragm.
